Harry shares his pike fishing expertise with a mate and makes good on his promise to get him a pike!
During the winter months I like to do some pike fishing, as there’s something magical about getting up early on a frosty morning and pursuing some Esox Lucius. Now I had been having a good run on my local reservoir of late, with fish up to fifteen pounds and it seemed I was having much more luck then the other anglers on the lake.
I was telling one of my carp fishing buddies about how good my pike fishing was getting and that I had finally cracked it, when he said that he had never been pike fishing and could I show him the ropes? Feeling like I was a real expert after my recent good form I said “No problem, I will get you a pike!”
So, on arriving at the lake we set off to one of my favourite spots where I set about putting all my mate’s gear together, setting up his rigs, telling him where to put his baits and I even supplied him with the bait.
Fifteen minutes later
After fifteen minutes, one of his bite alarms burst into life! “Get in!! I told you I would get you a pike!” I said, thinking ‘I am getting quite good at this game’ to myself. As he struck into the fish, I thought that this fish wasn’t half putting a good bend in his rod, so I said “I think you have got a double figure fish on there, that’s good for your first pike!” The next thing I knew, the fish was stripping line from his reel at an alarming rate, which had me wondering exactly how big it was!
The biggest fish in the lake
Slipping the net under what looked like a small crocodile, I couldn’t hide my envy, as this was the biggest pike I had seen on the bank at that time. On the scales, the pike weighed thirty four pounds and was also a new lake record and nearly twice the size of my biggest pike. Although I was gutted it wasn’t on my rod, I was really glad for my mate and it was a day that memories are made of.
