How do you know what fishing tactics, what baits or methods are going to work on a certain day? And more importantly, why they work on that day?
There’s nothing more important in an angler’s armoury than experience – time spent on the bank to improve your skills. However if someone asked you why a particular method worked on a particular day or what will work, say, in October, you would probably want to look back in your angling log to give an informed reply, oh but no one keeps logs anymore to see the what, where and why!
So here’s my story
A good few years ago now I was so obsessed with catching a particular carp I decided I needed to know how everything that affected a carp’s behaviour, so that I could come up with a plan to catch it. My carping buddy Adrian Wilson recommended a book written by Tim Paisley and I was assured by him that the answers I was looking for would be in it! The book was very in-depth indeed, it went in to moon phases, barometric pressures, wind direction and whilst it was great reading and very factual, once I was out fishing most of it went out of my head, or I didn’t have all the details on what was happening there and then – for example what the moon phase was or barometric pressure was at that particular time!
I should point out that this was before the smart phone had come out, so this kind of information wasn’t at your fingertips.
It’s nearly here!
Fast forward ten years or so and the Finygo fishing app is now near completion and not too long from now I will be able to see patterns, analyse my fishing and more importantly finally be able to answer the what, where and why questions, with catches and facts to back me up, only without having to look back through a log book!
